Massage Therapist Helping Katrina Victims

The tragedy of Hurricane Katrina has sparked an outpouring of donations. While many people donate money, Irene White found another way to contribute: volunteering her skills as a massage therapist.
Upon arriving at Hirsch Memorial Coliseum, the center for evacuee operations in Shreveport, Louisiana, Irene filled a need, not just administering massage therapy to those displaced by floodwaters, but also the other caretakers looking after the evacuees.
Shreveport, Louisiana rests a little under 350 miles Northwest of New Orleans, and while untouched by the storms that have ravaged the Gulf Coast, has become a relief center, with many people having been evacuated to Hirsch Memorial Coliseum, on the grounds of the Louisiana State Fair. It was to Hirsch Memorial Coliseum that Irene White drove, the first Thursday after the storm had hit.
Initially, White had intended to sort clothes and supplies. Help to coordinate the donations and route them to where they were supposed to go. When she got there, she found a state of chaos, the extent of which she hadn’t expected. Having completed her massage therapy licensure in May, White found her professional skills in need, picked up a chair, and got to work.
